Play It Forward Finals Eve Luncheon cements itself in the AFL calendar

On Friday 29 August, the inaugural Jim Stynes Foundation’s Play It Forward Finals Eve Luncheon brought together leaders and changemakers from across the AFL community to celebrate the powerful social impact being created through football.

Held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the event was filled with energy, connection, LEGO creations, lollies, Irish Espressos and a spirited welcome from Irish dancers that set the tone for an afternoon of celebration.

A highlight of the day was the presentation of the first Jim Stynes Club Community Award, proudly presented by McLardy McShane. The award recognised the North Melbourne Football Club for the outstanding work of The Huddle, its community arm dedicated to improving education and career outcomes for young people through the power of sport.

Accepting the award, CEO Cam McLeod paid tribute to Jim Stynes’ enduring legacy and acknowledged the dedication of staff, volunteers, players, educators, coaches and partners who continue to create a sense of belonging for thousands of young people.

The luncheon also celebrated individual leadership, with Callan Ward, Tom Liberatore and Harris Andrews announced as the finalists for the prestigious Jim Stynes Leadership Award. The winner will be presented at the 2026 Brownlow Medal.

Guests were treated to a finals preview panel featuring Daisy Pearce, Jordan Lewis and Matt Spangher, along with heartfelt reflections from Dyson Heppell, Eddie Betts and Bec Daniher, each reminding the audience that Jim Stynes’ vision continues to inspire both on and off the field.

In honour of Jim Stynes’ legacy, guests were on their feet to join in Jim’s Jig. Thanks to Bunnings Warehouse, the winning participant received $1000 in Bunnings vouchers, along with a $1000 donation to a charity of their choice.

For the first time, the AFL industry came together for an event solely dedicated to celebrating the good news stories of football. The overwhelming success of the Play It Forward Finals Eve Luncheon has laid the foundation for it to become a marquee annual tradition.
